FAQs
Frequently asked questions
These answers help people understand reconnection, outreach, the message backpack, donations, safety, and privacy. Will U Help exists to give unsheltered neighbors a real chance to reach the people they love—safely and with dignity.
Reconnection Process
How a message turns into a real chance for someone to reach a loved one again.
How does reconnecting with a lost loved one work?
We meet the person, ask who they want to reconnect with, record a short message, search for the loved one, and send the message. The loved one then decides if they want to reconnect.
Do you force anyone to reconnect?
No. Reconnection must be safe and voluntary. We create the first step. Both people still get to choose yes or no.
What are the possible outcomes?
The person says yes, the person says no, or we cannot locate them. Will U Help cannot guarantee that we will locate the person, that the person will respond, or that reconnection will occur.
How long does it take?
Some searches can begin quickly. Some take longer. The honest answer is: it depends on the information provided and how easy the person is to locate.
Why do you need a video?
A short video helps the loved one recognize the person and feel the sincerity of the request. It makes the message more human.
What if someone cannot record a video?
They can still ask for help. A written message, phone number, email, or social media contact may help us begin.
Can Will U Help research adoption-related reconnection requests?
At this time, Will U Help is unable to research adoption-related reconnection requests.
Street Outreach
Direct, respectful work on the streets across the United States.
What happens during outreach?
We go directly to the streets across the United States with dignity and care. We lean in and provide hugs and fist bumps. We provide message backpacks, and ask if they want help reconnecting with someone from their past.
Do you only help people who want reconnection?
No. We treat everyone we meet with dignity and care, whether or not they want help reconnecting.
Why do you say unsheltered instead of unhoused?
We use language that honors people. Unsheltered describes the current situation without making it their identity.
Backpacks & Donations
Practical tools for life outside, and how your gift moves the work forward.
Why are backpacks important?
A message backpack gives someone rugged, waterproof storage built for life outside. We provide a Sharpie so they can write any message they want the world to see, which can start conversations that lead to reconnection.
How much does a backpack sponsorship cost?
$50 sponsors a message backpack and helps provide a practical tool for someone living unsheltered.
Where does my donation go?
Donations help with backpacks, outreach supplies, travel, search tools, and the work required to reconnect people with loved ones.
Can I give monthly?
Yes. Monthly gifts help Will U Help reach more people consistently and plan outreach with confidence.
Can my church or business help?
Yes. Churches, businesses, and groups can sponsor backpacks, share the reconnection form, host a drive, or help fund outreach trips.
Safety & Privacy
We move carefully. People come first—both the person on the street and the loved one being contacted.
What if the loved one says no?
We respect that answer. The goal is reconnection, not pressure. A no still gives the person clarity instead of wondering forever.
What if reconnection is not safe?
Safety comes first. The person requesting reconnection must confirm there are no court orders, legal restrictions, or other safety concerns that would prevent them from contacting the person.
Can someone submit a form for another person?
Yes, absolutely, as long as they are with the person when submitting the form.
Recovery Reconnection
Working alongside rehab centers, detox programs, sober living homes, and recovery staff to help someone reach a supportive person from their past.
Can Will U Help work with recovery programs?
Yes. Will U Help can work with rehab centers, detox programs, sober living homes, recovery programs, shelters, outreach teams, and other organizations serving people who are unsheltered or entering recovery. Our role is to help someone ask whether there is a safe family member, loved one, or support person from their past who may be willing to help them get off the streets and continue rebuilding their life.
Is Will U Help a treatment provider?
No. Will U Help is not a medical provider, mental health provider, substance use disorder treatment provider, detox facility, recovery residence, emergency service, crisis response service, housing provider, or case management agency. Will U Help provides voluntary reconnection outreach. If there is an emergency, medical crisis, overdose, threat of harm, or immediate safety concern, call 911 or the appropriate emergency or crisis service in your area.
What question should recovery staff ask?
Recovery staff can ask: “Is there someone from your past who could support you as you get off the streets and continue recovery?” If that does not feel natural in the moment, staff can also ask: “Is there someone from your past we could help you reconnect with?” If they say yes, staff can help them complete the Reconnect Form and record the required short video message.
Can Will U Help guarantee reconnection?
No. Will U Help cannot guarantee that we will locate the person, that the person will respond, that reconnection will occur, that housing will be available, that treatment will continue, or that recovery outcomes will result. Reconnection is voluntary for everyone involved.
